Playing in a Band

Updated: Jan 19

Turbocharge your Guitar skills, Develop as a Musician, put your ego on hold & test your level of compromise.

Yes, its probably the fastest way to accelerate your skills as a musician,

"If you get in with the right bunch of fellows.!"

Learn to :

PLAY IN THE POCKET.

PLAY LESS & MAKE SPACE FOR OTHER MUSICIANS.

COLABORATE IN ORIGINAL MUSIC & UNIQUE TWISTS TO COVER SONGS.

DEVELOP YOUR SOUND.

DEVELOP AS AN ARTIST, DEVELOP A SHOW.

As you can see, the list of benefits are enormous & it all seems fairly straight forward, but if it were easy, we would all be ROCKSTARS !

"The fastest way to accelerate your skills as a musician"

So....in order to avoid the pit falls & the head aches, here's a few pointers to get you rolling forward without STEPPING onto too many land mines.

Q: What sort of Band?

Original Music / Cover Song Band / Tribute Band / Party Band / A bit of a mix?

This is important because you want to attract “like minded” musicians & there's no point starting anything with anybody if your goals are not aligned. Whatever the genre, make sure you have (predominatly) finished songs ready tO BE WORKED WITH IN A BAND SETTING & work towards building a SOLID set list (10 songs)

Q: How many Band members are you considering?

"Less is more", as they say. The more menbers the more hassle for someone to organise. Rehearsal space, Booking gig's, Making decisions, Organising everyone, Transport, Songlists, Sound & direction, etc, etc.

My personaL opinion is to keep the Band small & tight. SOLO / DUO / TRIO

Q: Your Band? Are you prepared to be the final decision maker & orgainse everyone?

Someone elses Band? Go with the flow & be the best Musician you can be.

If it were easy, we would all be ROCKSTARS !

The bottomline is, you can get into a Band and have alot of fun & grow as a Musician.

If you happen to be the only Guitarist, then you will need to rise up to the challenge & play all the chordal passages, riffs & solos, acurately & tastefully, which will quickly accellerate your abilities.

Joining an established Band made up of members with more experience than you will also put you in a position to rise up to the challenge & quickly accelerate your abilities.

Wheather you join an established Band, start your own Band or meet up with your neighbour to form a “Back Porch” power duo. The end goal should be to iron out the songs, develop a solid set list & start looking for places to play live. Open Mic, Blues Jam, Band Comp, whatever.

"Playing "LIVE" & being at ease performing is a huge step forward."

So whatever Band you end up being in, take the process seriously, but try not to take yourself too seriously. Commit to regular rehearsals, turn up on time, develop your sound & grow as a Musician.

Last thoughts:

To contribute & be part of a bigger picture is a great position to be in. Buy yourself some decent gear & remember to leave your ego at the door.

I hope you enjoy the experience & produce some music thats worth sharing.

Enjoy………..
