Learning guitar can be a gratifying experience. To master techniques & showcase your abilities / to while away the hours working the kinks out of your repertiore / to sit in the sun & play with freedom of expression / to collaborate with friends & other musicians.
Guitar learning is, however, the long game. There are lessons, methods and techniques, which will speed up your progress, but, in reality, its a discipline & outside of your regular guitar lessons, you will be self learning songs, methods & techniques, as part of a structured plan, devised by your Guitar Teacher.
Outside of your regular Guitar lessons, you will be self learning.

The teacher provides a roadmap to follow in order to jump through a series of technical hurdles. Each song, scale, technique & drill is offered with timing, rythmn, accuracy, theory, progression & playability in mind.
The goal is to reach a level of knowledge & playability so, you can understand aspects of theory, hear your own progress & start playing the selected repertoire with freedom.
.
It is at this level of progress, the student can start to pick & choose when & where they wish to follow the teachers roadmap or shoot off in their own direction in regard to song selection, methods & techniques.
The main takeaway’s here are :
Embrace being a beginner- The songs, the methods, the system & the learning.
There will be lots of opportunity to troll through endless youtube videos & songs, but while you are paying for lessons, apply yourself & knuckle down to the drills, techniques & methods. You may be surprised with the result & your rate of progress.
Remembering that we are all beginners. Its very much a “compared to who & according to what” scenario.
There will be lots of opportunity to troll through endless youtube songs & tutorials (try to keep it in control)

Develop a practice routine - eg: 20min of guitar practice & song learning most days.
Not just mindless noodling. Target on what needs the work.
Back yourself - improvement can seem a slow grind, but it’s also very noticable when there has been no practice.
Remember, what was a struggle to learn last week is easier this week.
Commit to learning:
“If it were easy, we would all be ROCKSTARS.”
Push past the beginner stage & hear your own development unfold!

Remember, the Teacher is a guide, you are, ultimately, the Captain of your own Ship.
Learn the basics, a system, a discipline & then start applying your own unique take on what sounds good & what approach to take.
Once you know the rules, they are there to be bent, tested and broken.
Good luck on your journey. I hope you enjoyed the post.
